As we all know, beauty definitely comes from the inside out. God continually works on the inside along with our efforts to allow that inward glow to shine out to others. We don't want to be a dusty window for His light to shine through. The "dust" of life can be made up of stinky attitudes, bad tempers, gossiping lips, and even those who don't have time to listen to others. Unfortunately, while trying to keep all of these things out of our lives, we often forget that our outward appearance does play a role in how willing people are to see and hear our testimony. I truly believe that beautiful skin is the basis for looking great on the outside!
So quit making excuses for poor skin and no skin care routine! Here are some very basic, and mostly affordable methods to up your skin care game!
1 - Cleansing
Daily cleansing is a must. All over cleansing doesn't have to be very particular, while face cleansing is definitely more important. Some people say that if you have dry skin you need to just use water. I am not a complete believer in this. There are gentle, all natural cleansers from brands like Lush, Neutrogena, and Aveeno, that are perfectly safe for dry skin and can help rid your pores of any dirt or bacteria. While those with oily skin may want something a little harsher, it is never a good idea to use something with fragrance, parabens, phthalates, or sunscreen chemicals.
I'm sure we have all used an exfoliator on our face a time or two. The rest of our body should not go unnoticed! While this is definitely not a daily necessity, it is good to rid your body of all the dead skin. Exfoliators can get expensive when using them all over the body, so just check out this simple DIY exfoliator.
DIY EXFOLIATOR: Combine 1/2 - 3/4 cup melted coconut oil with 1/2 cup of coarse ground sugar or salt. You can add a few drops of essential oil for fragrance. If it's still a little thin, just add more sugar or salt until you get the desired consistency. Also, if you have some coffee ground to get rid of, that is also a great thing to use in place of the sugar. The caffeine in the coffee helps tighten and firm the skin.
3 - Toning
This is the next step in facial skin care. Some of the best natural and affordable toners are straight witch hazel, Tea Tree essential oil combined with purified water, or even apple cider vinegar. This just helps clear off any leftover cleanser or dirt while transitioning and preparing your pores for moisturizer.
4 - Moisturize
Lastly, moisture is a complete must! Whether you have dry skin, combination skin, or extremely oily skin, you need to moisturize. For dry skin, something that has an oil base is great for putting on in the evenings before bed. This way it has time to soak in before you go out the next day. Try something a little lighter in the mornings so that you won't look oily. For combination skin, the easiest and most affordable fix is a light coat of coconut oil after your face cleansing routine on a daily basis. While it is considered an oil, it won't leave you feeling greasy. For oily skin, coconut oil can still be a great solution, but you may want to cut down to every other day or so. If you prefer a cream, make sure it is something oil free and lightweight. While you may think you are making your excess oil even heavier, moisturizing will actually help cut down on oil. When you strip your skin of oil with cleansers and scrub, your skin will automatically try to compensate for that lost oil. If you just give your skin the good moisture it needs, it won't overwork itself and cause excess oils. For overall body moisture, lather up in your favorite smell good body cream before bed each night. This way, the moisture will soak in instead of drying out while you are up and around.
The biggest tip of all is simply BE CONSISTENT! When it comes to skincare, consistency is so important. You can use the best products out there and use every product in the line up, but if you only do it on the weekends, you probably won't have good skin. And I quote "Beautiful skin requires commitment, not a miracle."
So how about it ladies? If you are not one to spend time on your skin, try challenging yourself to do these things for the next 30 days. I promise, once you see how much better your skin looks and feels, you won't want to stop. Be sure your inward glow isn't smothered by your outward non-glow.
